From 1876 to 1878, the five provinces of Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, Zhili and Shandong were struck by widespread famine, was estimated more than 10 million victims faced starvation and 20 million victims escaped to other country. Tung Wah Hospital raised a total of 160,000 silver dollars for disaster relief. This act of benevolence was rewarded by this plaque from Qing emperor Guangxu in the 5th year of his reign (1879) . “Shen Wei Pu You” means “god’s might protect all”.
