Worshippers of Ji Gong in traditional blue robes with mala prayer bead and gourd flasks gather at Pak Shing Temple yesterday to mark the opening of the International Ji Gong Cultural Festival, which aims to promote the branch of Buddhist faith. The scarlet, Chinese-style Pak Shing Temple is nestled in the concrete jungle of Sheung Wan and worships Ji Gong, a Buddhist monk from the Southern Song dynasty. Born Li Xiuyuan, he became a maverick who helped the poor while defying the code for monks by drinking and eating meat. Visitors can take guided tours of the temple at 40 Tai Ping Shan Street on weekends this mon.
