The Standard - Hooray for Hollywood

2022年11月18日

Spend one day exploring Hong Kong's story by visiting 12 historic buildings on and around Hollywood Road.

In celebration of the SAR's 25th anniversary, Heritage Vogue Hollywood Road will be held on Sunday, offering free activities such as guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, art, outdoor movie screening, traditional culture, fire dragon dance and performances.

"We hope to give the public a chance to experience the rich history, culture and arts ambience of the district," said a spokesman for the Commissioner for Heritage's Office of the Development Bureau.

On the list are popular places such as Tai Kwun and Man Mo Temple. But lesser-known buildings are worth a visit.

Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences is showing the history and development of the sector in the city.

"We would like to raise public awareness on the history and development in surveillance control of the plague and other infectious diseases, especially after Covid-19," the spokesman said.

On the event day, the Tsun Lok Dizi ensemble will be performing inside the building. "The group focuses on bamboo flute and dongxiao repertoires, as well as rearranging Chinese and Western orchestral pieces to promote dizi music in Hong Kong," said the spokesman.

Taster events will be held in marquees set up in the Prison Yard in Tai Kwun by historic buildings under the Revitalization Scheme. After taking part in some, you can also head to the buildings for a more in-depth look.

The Hong Kong News-Expo, for example, has an interactive booth where you can try your hand at being a journalist using photo-taking props.

Then you can visit the building on Bridges Street to find out more about the media in Hong Kong.

There is a permanent exhibition divided into different sections to show Hong Kong media's development as well as thematic exhibitions, such as the development of the media industry in the past 25 years.

Right outside the building is Shing Wong Street. On Sunday, rickshaws will be placed there for people to take photos with.

On the opposite end of Hollywood Road is the striking red-and-white building of the Fringe Club.

It is known as a place for exhibitions, performances and cultural exchange events but did you also know that it has a close connection with Dairy Farm?

The Eye of Mr Postman Chan presents nostalgic photos by Chan Ming-keung, who after making his rounds in Pok Fu Lam would capture scenes of the area at a time when dairy cows still roamed free.

While you're in the area, take the opportunity to visit the Helena May. The private members' social club will be open to the public on Sunday. Though the guided tours around the building have been fully booked, visitors can enjoy a chamber music concert presented by the Orchestra Academy of Hong Kong there.
